“I’m huge!” I complained. I couldn’t fit into any of my clothes, and as comfortable as I was in Ares’, they weren’t the most flattering.
            “You’re beautiful, querida.”
“Are English pet names not good enough for you?”
“No language has enough pet names.”
            “Ugh! You’re so impossible sometimes.”
He stepped forward with a hungry glint in his eyes. I had just enough time to give him a seething glare before his arms snaked around me and held me hostage.
“What are you doing?” I growled.
            “Being impossible. Can’t you tell?”
I gave him a wry smile. “Is this supposed to be worse than you usually are? Because, I have to say, this isn’t so bad. I could get free very easily.”
            “Is that so?”
I made a grab for his crotch. “You tell me.”
“The only good that’ll do is get you held hostage horizontally.” The husky tone in his voice told me that not only did he mean it, but he might do it even if I released my hold.
            “Horny dog.”
            “Quite literally I’m afraid.”
“Alright, let me go. Pregnant woman has to pee.”
“Charming.” His hold on me loosened, and I shoved his arms out of the way with more force than was strictly necessary.
“Because manners are so highly valued in this house, right?” I waddled to the bathroom. I could hear his distinctive chuckle behind me. I snarled in response to it.
A few minutes later I stepped out of the bathroom, greatly relieved of one of my pregnant urges.
The other however…. “I’m in dire need of food.” I pronounced.
            “Of course you are.”
Rather than dignifying that with a response, I shuffled passed him. Advantage to being hugely pregnant: way more inertia. Nothing was going to stand in my way of much needed sustenance. Having no other option that wouldn’t involve one or both of us landing on the floor, Ares obligingly stepped out of the way. I allowed myself a moment of petty glory as I passed him.
I wobbled down the stairs, and almost fell over at one point, but my ever-stalking shadow deftly caught and righted me before I could do any harm to either me or my child. My child. I was actually starting to really like the sound of that. I was sure Ares felt the same way when his hand lingered on my stomach a little longer than was strictly necessary.
When we reached the bottom of the stairs and I was safely out of danger, I lifted my face to Ares’ hunting for a kiss. He made a show of taking the kiss too far in front of the six-or-so pack members who’d come to gauge my process. I pushed him away lightly. Far from looking repentant, he just smiled and kissed my forehead.
“You can be so annoying.” I whined loud enough that even Abby heard it in the kitchen. I knew because she made a grunt of agreement.
            “Because you’re such a saint?”
            “Yes.” I sniffed delicately.
“Well, she is mated to you, Ares.” Leah chimed in. “And I’m pretty sure only a saint could handle that.”
“I’m just using him for his body.” I assured her.
“Manners!” Abby snapped from the dining room. “Your child is going to be so dysfunctional!”
            “Sorry Abbsie!” I called.
“Ugh.” She groaned at the nickname. “Get in here and eat breakfast. I made a point of emptying out the pantry for you.”
I huffed. “Even Abby is making fun of the pregnant woman!” I didn’t really care though because at the word “breakfast”, my stomach began to growl even more persistently.

Once we were all seated at the table, and everyone but me was finished eating, Ares delved into serious conversation mode.
“The pack hasn’t gone for a run in a while, but as you can all understand, I don’t want to leave Alyssa unguarded.”
“I can stay and watch her.” Jason offered. He didn’t much like running as a wolf, but if he didn’t run for too long, he’d lose control over his shifting. I had a feeling he’d like that even less.
“When was the last time you ran?”
            “A month-or-so ago.”
“Jase, you need to be running at least once every two weeks. You know what Tim said. I can’t let you skip this run.”
“She needs someone to watch over her.”
            “Someone else. Leah? Mom?”
The both agreed. I suspected that he wanted me to have more contact with females right now.
“They need a guy to stay with them.” Leah bristled a little at Jason’s comment.
“Which is exactly why I’m waiting for Timothy to get here.”
“I so don’t need a guy to protect me.” Leah interjected.
“Maybe not, but Alyssa does need a doctor. When will he get here?”
“He should be here around ten tomorrow morning.” I was too engulfed in finishing the last of my food to notice who said that. I chided myself to pay more attention.
“That doesn’t leave us much time to run. She’ll deliver the day after tomorrow, and we have to prepare a room for her to deliver in.”
“’S okay.” Evan said. “It’ll be good just to change for a while.”
Apparently Abby had been stewing for a while because her self control finally snapped. That does not happen often. “So, every female pack member gets to baby sit Alyssa but me?” She complained bitterly.
If Ares was surprised at her outburst, he didn’t show it. “Abby, you skipped the last run because you were feeling sick, remember?” He paused. “I have to take care of you just like I do Jason. Besides, there are other places besides the kitchen.”
“Trust you to have a good reason when it’s the most inconvenient. And Maybe if everyone didn’t eat so much, I could leave the kitchen on occasion.” She grumbled at him. I wasn’t sure that I’d even seen her so disgruntle.
            Everyone chuckled a little.
“Okay, but I’m leaving lots of leftovers.”
“Like I’d let you leave without making food for me.” I grinned at her.
She flashed me a humoring smile. “You wouldn’t even let me before you got pregnant. It’d just be a death wish now.”
“Does that mean everyone is done eating?” Ares asked looking directly at me.
            “I’ve been done!”
“Everyone has been done for a while.” Jason shot me a smile.
            “Damn right.”
“Okay then, who is going to ready the guest room?” I didn’t even bother to speak up, knowing that no one would let me do anything even if I did.
“Evan and I will.” Abby piped up.
“Speaking of getting ready, what’s the baby going to wear?” I thought maybe I could go clothes shopping at least.
            “Clothes.” Leah immediately responded.
“Silly girl.” Janet chided. “What kind of Gramma would I be if I hadn’t already bought gender neutral clothes as soon as I heard you were pregnant.” Translation: “Ares would kill me if I let you go shopping with someone out to kill you.”
Still, it was sweet. It was the most attention I’d even gotten from her. “You bought clothes for my baby?”
“Of course sugar.” She looked at me with motherly affection. “We’ll go through everything while the pack is out running.”
Her sincerity pulled a genuine smile out of me.
“Thank you Mom.” Ares said, his eyes never left my face.
I blushed a little. “What are you looking at?”
            The room got very quiet.
            “Right, well. Ares, I’m tired.”
“Sure you are.” Jason’s laughed boomed through the room, causing even Abby to laugh.
“I’m knocked up! I’m not about to jump his bones.” I huffed.
“Only because your stomach is in the way.” Leah sniggered.
            “Ares! They’re being mean!”
He obligingly used his Alpha-glare on them. “How ‘bout we just go upstairs and get away from their cruel comments.”
“Mmkay. I’m definitely taking a nap then.”
“You make an adorable pregnant woman, you know that?”
I snarled as he led me up the stairs. Stepping over the threshold into his room, I felt a weight drop off. There was nothing quite so nice as not being in front of a bunch of people when you’re newly pregnant but huge anyway and completely self-conscious.
“How’re you feeling?” Ares asked almost warily as he scrutinized my face.
“Tired.” I offered a small smile. “You?”
“I don’t know.” He sighed. “It’s all a little surreal to me. We’re about to be parents, sugar. I don’t know if I’m entirely ready for it.”
If I’d had any idea that he’d been worrying about this I’d have talked to him sooner. “You already take care of the pack. How can one more person be so different?”
“It’s entirely different, and you know it.” He sounded a little snarly. Snarly was good.
I shrugged, trying to keep the smile from playing on my lips.
He smiled at my response… probably knowing that I was trying hard to not smile. “How can you be so calm?”
“You think I’m calm?” I was incredulous. “I wanted to abort it a couple days ago.”
“Yeah, but since then, you’re been so peaceful. It’s amazing, but I can’t help but wonder why you changed so much.”
“Honestly?” I waited for him to nod. “I’ve no idea. It’s like since I decided to keep it; my other half has been lending me strength. It’s almost like I’m coming into my heritage. Does that make any sense?”
“Does that mean you’re accepting more than just your motherhood?”
“I guess you could put it that way.”
He smiled. “It makes perfect sense. Are you going to start using magic to protect the pack?”
“If I can figure out how.”
“You make a good Alpha. Do you realize that?”
“Don’t I have to be a born wolf to qualify for that position?”
“Ah, no.” He shook his head. “Besides, you’ve almost got the growling down. That’s a big part of being Alpha-wolf.”
I smiled at him. “If I use my Alpha-growl on you, can I go to sleep?”
            “That tired, love?”
            “Mmhmm.” I mumbled.
“I won’t be able to stay the entire time. Have a few arrangements to make, you know?” Yeah, a few. Like coordinating a run, setting up a birthing room, and flying a doctor in to deliver a baby that will be weird even by supernatural standards. Could be difficult to do without planning.
“’Kay just lay down with me.”
I fell asleep to a now very peaceful werewolf stroking my hair, pausing every so often to kiss my forehead. Life was good.

Just as was happening way too often as of late, after I fell asleep I had a disturbing dream. So much for the good life.
A veiled woman sat opposite me in a mostly empty room. I could see dark hair under the veil, and there was a large painting of a crow on the wall behind her.
I’m not one to sit quietly for long, so I called out to her. “Hello?”
            “The child won’t be normal.”
Of course not, it’d be half-wolf, half-witch, but I knew that wasn’t what she was talking about so I placed a protective hand over my stomach.
“It will grow quickly, reaching the physical age of nine in twenty-one days. Luckily for you, it’ll be much more mentally advanced. They will not expect this. Teach it strong morals, and it will do what is right.”
“How do you know this?” I finally got up the courage to ask.
“I see the deaths of warriors. It only makes sense that I’d also see ways to prevent them.” I couldn’t see her face to read her expression, but her words were chilling enough.
The vision shimmered and faded with her words hanging in the air.

I woke up feeling distinctly colder than I had when I fell asleep. I was cold and alone. It was seriously depressing.
Next part. Enjoy. And hopefully someone has thought of a brilliant name for it. That would completely kick ass.
